Bangkok supports a mushrooming number of department store chains. Central Department Store is the largest; its most accessible branches are at Chidlom, 1027 Ploenchit Rd. and two branches at both 191 and 306 Silom Rd. Similar to the Central chain is Robinson's with branches at 2 Silom Rd. and 1522 Charoen Krung (New Rd.). Like Central, it's best for buying staples such as socks, underwear, and other basics.

A real trip is browsing in the perpetually crowded Thai Tokyu department store in the Maboonkrong (MBK) at the corner of Rama I and Phayathai roads (where you'll also find one of Bangkok's best food court); this is better for the spectacle of "how Bangkok shops" than for the merchandise.

Among the city's many shopping arcades, malls, and plazas, some of the most interesting are the ones mentioned here so, let’s find out where to go shopping:

wtc

::Central World Plaza:: (World Trade Center)

This centre comprises of the ZEN, Isetan and Duty Free shopping centres, with hundreds of additional small shops to go with it. It is opposite the Grand Hyatt Hotel and is the most central of all the shopping locations. Open: from 10 am to 9 pm. Skytrain station: National Stadium - Note: Currently closed, undergoing a total renovation.

Emporium1

::Emporium:: - Sukhumvit Soi 26

Emporium is an absolutely amazing shopping centre and some would say the best in Bangkok, It has a cinema, and a lot of quality designer wear, a department store and beauty salons, as well as comfortable shopping in air-conditioned comfort. They also have an excellent food court at ridiculously cheap prices, which offers diners a lovely view over the adjacent small park.  Open: from 10 am to 9 pm.  Skytrain station: Phrom Phong  For more info, visit their web site here!

gaysorn_plaza

::Gaysorn Plaza:: - 999 Ploenchit Rd.

Gaysorn Plaza Reopened after a lengthy close and renovation in July 2002. It is a relatively upscale shopping centre all the high class status labels sold here. You can access via a walkway from Siam Skytrain station. Opposite the World Trade Centre and the Grand Hyatt Hotel, with a variety of shops. Open: from 10 am to 9 pm. siam_discovery

::Siam Square::
Siam Centre, which along with Siam Discovery now forms a huge shopping complex where one mall merges into the next, and is a favourite hangout of teens and twenty-somethings. Good local fashion designers and brand name labels plus European established names and even that British favourite, Marks and Spencer. Huge cinema complex located on the top floor. The Hard Rock Cafe and Concept CM2 disco is also in this vicinity or area.

MBK

::MBK (Maboonkrong)::

MBK (Maboonkrong) Eight floors with more than 89,000 sq.m packed with shops and more shops selling everything from crop tops to pianos. Hectic and busy especially at the weekend when half of Bangkok seems to coverge there. The food court on the sixth floor is enormous. The seventh floor includes 8 modern movie theatres showing latest releases. Everything can be bought here at very good prices. river_city

::River City::

The River City complex might look like just another modern mall, but the third and fours floors are the hub of Bangkok's trade in all things old and beautiful.

The glass-fronted galleries are well-lit to show off the detail of the pieces they house - be they original antiques or tasteful reproductions. Antiques from all over Asia find their way here, and the most venerated being century's old, gold-covered images of Buddha.

Don't be fooled by the calm, non-crowded ambience of River City. It may seem devoid of the shopping hoards, but this is a specialist market and 80% of shoppers make a purchase - more than enough to keep the businesses housed here afloat. Visit their web site by clicking here!

sampeng_lane

::Sampeng Lane::

Running Through the heart of Chinatown is Sampeng Lane, a narrow walkway lined with market stalls and tiny local shops jostling for room.

Sampeng seems to go on for miles with each section specializing in certain goods. Walk through braids and beads to costume jewellery, to cutlery, fabrics (some sold only by the roll) party favours, monks supplies, Chinese lanterns... it's exhausting. Forget buying one or two items. Although not strictly wholesale many of the items are bought in dozens or by the roll.

Inside the maze of lanes and alleys within Chinatown is The Thieves Market, or Nakhon Kasem is slightly north of the western end of Sampeng Lane. Though legitimate today, it was so named because this was where goods stolen from houses inevitably turned up. It's now a good area for looking or buying Thai or Chinese antiques.

There's quite a number of shops and reasonable range of supposedly antique and second hand goods, a few antiques, coffee grinders, ice cream makers and a selection of Chinese gongs awaits.

Both markets are usually crowded, very busy and the aroma of strange smells but that's half the fun. Pace yourself!
