Lonely Planet Thai Phrasebook (4th Ed)
Comment:
Brilliant, as we have come to expect from all of Joe's work. Includes a non-trivial section on grammar, a handy menu decoder where the Thai script is listed first, and now includes hill tribe languages (previously a separate book).
Essential.

The best pocket Thai language tourist dictionary I have encountered; it betters most bulkier works. Includes both Thai script and an excellent, well-documented transliteration system, with tone markings. A joy.
Highest recommendation.

Thai-English Dictionary
by George Bradley McFarland
Comment:
Published in 1944, this definitive reference work has now been superceeded by many superior and more up-to-date works. Many usages and definitions are archaic, and a lot of space is given to arcane minutae. Like Haas' large dictionary, this one is essential for a serious student, until one becomes more able to use native-Thai dictionaries.

Welcome To Hell : An Irishman's Fight For Life Inside The Bangkok Hilton by Colin Martin’s

Maverick House is delighted to announce that Welcome to Hell, Colin Martin’s best selling autobiography, is now available in Thailand. This gripping book chronicles an innocent man’s struggle to survive inside the Bangkok Hilton, one of the world’s most dangerous prisons.

Honest and often disturbing – but told with a surprising humour – Welcome to Hell is the remarkable story of how Colin was denied justice again and again. In this extraordinary account he describes the swindle, his arrest and vicious torture by police, the unfair trial, and the 8 years of brutality and squalor he was forced to endure.

'Reads like an unputdownable work of fiction...' - Kieran Meeke, Metro

The Damage Done: Twelve Years of Hell in a Bangkok Prison by Warren Fellows  (Paperback)

Customer Review (Matthew P. Arsenault)

There are very few things in this world that could be worse than being sentenced to a long stretch in a Thai prison. I picked up The Damage Done while on holiday in Bangkok and my trip certainly took a turn for the frighteningly paranoid.

In The Damage Done, Warren Fellows readily admits to smuggling drugs between South East Asia and his native Australia. He further admits to the many criminal indiscretions of his youth which brought him to his most unenviable predicament. However, Fellows never begs for the sympathy of the reader but rather recaptures his not so anomalous tale of traversing an Asian court system and subsequently its notorious prisons.

Fellows captures the rancid food, drug abuse and violence found in a Thai prison and the consequences such an environment plays on a captive's mental and physical state. Still, Fellows abstains from turning his experience into a preachy tale of woe, and keeps his work cuttingly sharp and extremely interesting. A Must.

Murder at the Horny Toad Bar: & Other Outrageous Tales of Thailand (Paperback)
by Dean Barret

Editorial Review: (from the inside flap)

Among several exotic and erotic tales of Thailand, readers are introduced to Bangkok’s sexiest, most daring and least principled detective, Harry Boroditsky, who solves not one but two bizarre cases including, Murder at the Horny Toad Bar. Hard Bones Haggerty is a haunting tale of the Vietnam War, and, in Obsession, a man obsessed with his Thai girlfriend seeks revenge.

The Go Go Dancer Who Stole My Viagra & Other Poetic Tragedies Of Thailand (Paperback)
by Dean Barret

Customer Review: (Daniel Hodkins, Florida)

I almost didn't buy this book as I thought it might be too superficial but although it is uneven (it would have to be given the number of styles the author uses) most of the poems are very well written, some are moving, and some are very humorous. The one on fates of writers (mostly suicides) is interesting and poems on Thailand show the author's knowledge of and love for the country. Not all pieces are poems, but all are thoughtful and well written. If you like irreverent poetry, try this - you'll be glad you did.

Thai Food

Thai Food by David Thompson, Earl Carter (Photographer) - (hard cover)

"Thai cooking is a paradox," writes Australian restaurateur David Thompson in his comprehensive and thus aptly named Thai Food. "It uses robustly flavoured ingredients--garlic, shrimp paste, chilies, lemongrass--and yet when they are melded during cooking they arrive at a sophisticated and often subtle elegance." Pursuing this transformation in depth, his book presents hundreds of recipes that celebrate the Thai meal while exploring its historical and cultural context. Readers will delight in the wide selection of authentic dishes like Duck and Spring Onion Soup, Grilled Beef Salad, and Green Chicken Curry with Baby Corn, and relish Thompson's vast appreciation of his subject.
Though the recipes are straightforward and workable once ingredients are assembled and techniques understood, those new to Thai cooking may want a less rigourous introduction to the subject. However, anyone with an appetite to explore it on Thompson's terms will benefit immensely.
